1) why we bought this TV & first impressions - we've had this TV for 4 days now, and we couldn't be happier! i've been writing a running commentary of our initial impressions which i'll now consolidate to make for easier reading. we really benefited from all the reviews and advice that other people took the time to write, so we wanted to "pay it forward"

first, some background:

CONTEXT  AND SKILL-SET: we're a 1 TV household, averaging around 20 hours a week. we use the set for TV and DVD's only; no gaming. we were replacing a wonderfully dependable but huge, 10 year-old samsung tube toad. we did a lot of research before buying the lg 50PZ950, but we're not particularly knowledgeable about A/V stuff in general. why tell you all this? because it's important to know any reviewer's knowledge base (low-middling in our case) and context (moving from a CRT to a flatscreen). our perspective may not be relevant to all readers.

WHY PLASMA: lack of motion blur for sports makes my husband happy, and the rich, immersive movie experience at night makes me happy. our only experience with LCD is our imac, and while watching movies on the mac is great (vivid and sharp) it doesn't provide the rich, deep, "pull you in" sense that plasma does. IMO, anyway.

WHY 3D: frankly, we didn't really care about 3D, but thought it might be fun once in a while, so why not?

WHY THE INFINIA: like a lot of people in our price range (~$1,600) we started out choosing between the panasonic & the samsung. based on consumerreports.org reviews for last year's models, we included the lg infinia as well. all three were highly rated; all within 1 point of each other. plus the advance word from the 2011 CES was very encouraging. we were pretty confident we wouldn't be making a mistake with any one of the 3 brands. in the end, it came down to 2 factors: looks & the user interface. the infinia looks beautiful: on or off. and the user interface is simple and straightforward.

WHY WE BOUGHT FROM AMAZON: we've always been very impressed with amazon, especially their customer service. and never more so than in this case. the first PZ950 we received was broken. fortunately, amazon uses special delivery service: they unpacked the TV for us so we were able to plug it in. the spiderweb break wasn't apparent until the set was on. they immediately took the set back and amazon arranged to get another one here pronto, in time for my husband's b'day. thank you amazon! and thank you home direct.

ok, now our impressions based on 4 days of loving this tv...

PICTURE: the picture quality is wonderful. even better than i'd hoped. deep blacks and lush, rich true-to-life colors. lots of depth. sometimes almost looks 3D when not in 3D. fabulous detail on HD... and obviously less so on SD (standard definition.)

DAYTIME VIEWING: we have the set in a very bright room (lots of south-facing windows). daytime glare was our initial worry, before buying the set. turns out, no problem. yes, the screen is reflective when off, but the reflections drop out when on. NOTE ADDED 3.17: viewed tv today for first time at max sunlight (noon-ish): saw reflections of myself and everything else in the room. not so bad that i couldn't comfortably watch the set, but wanted to let you know in case that's a deal-breaker for you. fyi, we have a large bank of 6' unshaded south-facing windows in this room which flood the entire room with direct sunlight mid-day. still adore this tv, and the reflections are not a problem for us, but wanted to let you know.

NIGHTTIME VIEWING: heavenly! totally immersive experience when watching movies at night.

AUDIO: the sound quality is excellent, and the clear voice II feature is particularly useful for those of us a little longer in the tooth thus harder of hearing. and the auto volume setting keeps commercials from jolting you out of your chair.

3D: well, i bought the wrong glasses so we haven't seen 3D yet. but based on consumerreport.org's ratings of last year's version (the 50PX950) and other reviews on this year's models, i know it's going to be great. fyi, you need the lg AGS250's -- not the AGS110's.

REMOTES: it comes with 2 remotes: one traditional (back-lit) and one magic wand thingee. i didn't think we'd use the wand, but we do; it's great. in addition to being an on-screen pointer, it's also distilled down to just the essential buttons: on/off, home, volume rocker, channel rocker, and select. easy, intuitive, and fun.

MEDIALINK: this is great! let's you wirelessly access all the photos on your computer, all the music & more on itunes. pictures look great -- better than when you view them on the picassa app. plus there's smart share (which we haven't used yet) which lets you import via USB thumb drive.

NOTE FOR MAC USERS: the TV comes with nero mediahome 4 esentials, but that only works with a PC. go to the plex website, click on the special lg section, download the mac software, et voila: medialink works perfectly.

APPS: we haven't used a lot of the 3rd party apps, except for google maps (which is terrific on the big screen) and picassa (which is fun for looking at pix from friends). the TV also comes with netflix, cinema now, vudu, napster, viewster, amazon, NBA, MLB, youtube, facebook, twitter, AP, V tuner, Iplay, fun spot, and accu weather. plus there's some lg apps which are a little dorky (no offense, lg); selection will doubtless improve over time.

CALIBRATION: we have not calibrated the TV. partly because we don't know how, but mainly because we've been so happy with it just the way it is. the blacks are deep, and the colors are lush but not loud. there's a nice feature which lets you create & save your own preferred mix of settings.

BREAK-IN PERIOD: we're being really careful for the first hundred hours. some debate on whether it's necessary, but why chance it? besides, it's no hardship to limit fixed image viewing or to take it easy on brightness and contrast to start. probably even better to run a break-in disk. fyi, easy to keep track of how many total hours you've viewed to date by going to: set up, support, product info... gives you a running total of hours on.

WEB BROWSER: a little pokey, but surprisingly useful every now and again.

LG SERVICE: we ran into a problem early on using the (included) dongle for wireless. put a call into lg (1-800-243-0000) turns out the problem was me: i didn't give the TV time to update the firmware. when the set says "don't turn me off", don't... or the update won't finish. when the update finishes, the TV turns itself off and then back on. thank you, leyza, at lg, for walking me through it.

WHAT ELSE... suggest you download the manual from the lg website before the TV arrives so you'll know how to handle (lift, carry, etc.), where to place, etc.

that's about it. if you buy this TV, i hope you love it as much as we do!

1) Exactly what we were looking for - Our box TV died, so we finally entered the flat screen market. (Our kid's neighborhood friends can stop laughing now every time they come over.) Buying on a budget, we were looking for a 47"-55" television for around $500.00, though we were willing to spend up to $750.00. After a day of research and shopping we settled on this TV, and we are very happy with the choice. We paid $429.00 for the set and the picture quality is great, the television is sleek and elegant, and the stand swivels and blends in with the set just fine. It's a perfect fit for our modestly sized family room.

At first I was concerned about the 720p resolution, but after reading reviews we were assured that picture would be fine and compared to other televisions the difference would be indistinguishable unless you were two or three feet away from the screen looking at text. Sure enough, we have the set and the picture quality is excellent. I prefer the plasma sets over the LED models. To me the picture is more vibrant with the plasmas, and that is definitely the case with this LG model.

This set is bare bones. Only two HDMI ports and one USB. But that's not a problem for us. We are able to hook our pc to the TV and that provides most of the features that a SMART TV would provide. (SMART TV? Has there ever been a more funny oxymoron?) I do not find the bare bones aspect of the television to be a problem since we are minimalists. In fact, I like how easy this television is to figure out. The remote is very intuitive and so is the operation of its different modes. We wanted a television that offered a big screen with outstanding picture quality for the best price possible. I believe we found that with the LG 50PN4500. It doesn't make coffee, it can't iron our clothes, and it won't take the angst out of my teenage daughter's life, but it does make television viewing a genuine pleasure.

Our family watched Les Miserables last night, and the sound quality was very good and the picture was outstanding. A wonderful viewing experience for the four of us.

1) very energy efficient ! - I bought this TV (2015 model) at Target recently, and it has been working well. It only weighs about 20 pounds, so it was easy to carry and to assemble (two legs). The TV was all set after connecting some media boxes and cable and took only about 10 minute. This is a 2015 model, and the design has not changed much from last year’s model, but I really like the design. The thin and metallic look bezel (still plastic) is trendy and simple; all thick black bezel looks like a thing of the past. The 2.2 inches of thiness is about half of the thickness from my 55&#34; sammy LED TV, and it makes easy and elegant to hang on the wall. FYI, if one wanted to wall mount, this TV has vesa 400 x 400 mm and comes with a pair of wall mount space for the upper holes.<br /><br />The factory default color setting was quite good; I did not have to adjust anything to calibrate the colors and what not. This is my third LED TV from LG (various sizes and models I’ve purchased in the past several years), and I always found that the color setting was very natural and accurate. In contrast, other brands’ LED TVs I’ve owned needed some color adjustment to make it look more natural. However, if one prefers different color presets (vivid, APS, cinema, game, expert1 and 2) are available in the menu.) I just prefer the standard color setting. On this TV, movies and TV shows look very nice. The picture quality is super clear and sharp; it's pleasuring to watch things in good HD quality. And of course, a nice set of extra speakers would help gaining more pleasure since the built in speakers are 'built in' speakers.<br /><br />One thing I'd like to mention in this review is the yellowish tint on the right hand side of the screen. It is very subtle and minimal, and I don't think it's noticeable for a normal consumer, but because I am sensitive to color accuracy, I picked out on a white background. However, during daily TV watching, this was not be noticeable at all, and mine did not show any light bleeding or dead pixels.<br /><br />Overall, I like this very basic LED TV. It's not a 'smart' model, but a Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, or Apple TV are always better than 'smart' TV, in my opinion. Picture quality is what’s impressive, and it clearly stood out among other LED TVs when I looked side by side at the store. However, the biggest pro for me on this one is the low energy consumption. I set the Energy Saving mode at medium and my P3 meter measured 29 Watts/hour. That’s probably 10 times less than what Plasma TVs used to consumed in the past. Less than 30 watts/hour is pretty impressive, and the screen is still not too dim. Now I don’t feel too guilty watching a TV too long.

1) New 42" LG Works Well - So far, so good. I've had it for about a week. It was relatively easy to set up - it took about 8 minutes to program the entire thing. The 1080p is super clear - this is way better than our old Samsung 720p TV. I also like the “sport mode.” I wish LG still made a 47&#34; model, but oh well - the 50&#34; would just look comically large in my living room over my TV stand, and I didn't want to buy an older model TV, so I bought this 42&#34; one. I would highly recommend this LG 42&#34; TV! But to be fair, one negative I've noticed with this model is that it responds slowly to its remote, and you have to point the remote directly at the TV for it to register.

1) The best picture I've every seen and a physical design that impresses everyone who sees it. - Reading the reviews on this set, I’m pleased that a number of people have found a creative outlet here on Amazon. Some are very humorous indeed. Unfortunately my review, based on actually owning the TV for the last month, will not be as funny.

The Look
The physical design of this set is a thing to behold. I’ve seen it at stores and at CES in Las Vegas but it was always displayed next to a wall or another TV. I put it on a table that (for the moment anyway) is in the middle of the room. Everyone who has visited is amazed at both the curved design and how very thin the screen is. I had a washing machine repairman at the house last week and he stopped mid-room and asked “Sir, can I look at your TV?” Of course I said yes. I eat that sort of feedback up like candy.

The back is very clean and has the “classic” carbon fiber pattern to it. The very narrow bezel means that it takes only 4 inches more horizontal space than the 46” LCD it replaced.

The set can’t be wall mounted and the clear “ribbon” stand can’t be removed.
The Sound
I wasn’t planning on getting much sound from the see-through speakers in the stand but I was pleasantly surprised. Half volume was plenty loud for normal viewing. For a set of this level, I’d suggest a full home theater surround sound set up, of course. You wouldn’t want to do a sound bar on this set – it wouldn’t look good next to the clear stand.

The Picture
What can I say? This is the best picture of any TV I’ve ever owned. Black is the absence of light and that provides infinite contrast. The set is pre-calibrated at the factory. The THX mode is perfect in every respect – at least as much as the calibration equipment that I have can determine. You can’t adjust THX mode. ISF Expert modes 1 and 2 are also calibrated but you can adjust those if you feel the need.

I’m not going to post settings as I didn’t need to make any changes.

One thing. Some programming will look much better on an OLED than on a LCD set – most Blu-ray movies, TV shows that have a lot of dark backgrounds and moody lighting. But shows that are very bright – sports, talk shows, and scripted shows that are filmed with limited contrast—won’t look that much different.
I see no changes in picture quality regardless of viewing angle. You can stand facing the end of the set and the parts you can still see (mostly the opposite curved part) still looks great.

The curved design really isn’t noticeable when sitting in front of the set. I forgot about that aspect of the design almost immediately.

The Remote
The remote control I’m less happy with. It’s a virtual mouse device. You wave it in front of the TV to move a cursor around. Unfortunately the remote goes into sleep mode very quickly and I have to shake it to wake it up. You can control other devices but that’s done through an onscreen menu. So stopping a movie playing on Blu-ray means clicking the menu button, shaking the remote awake, move the cursor to the stop button on screen, and clicking.

I’m sticking with my universal remote. The LG remote is RF but the TV still listens for IR signals too. However, there’s no way to learn commands with a universal remote beyond the default codes built in.

The Delivery
A common carrier delivered the set. If you’ve not worked with a common carrier before, it’s not as straight forward an experience as with Fedex or UPS.

I ordered it on a Monday and the delivery took place 8 days later. The set is shipped in both a cardboard box and a wooden crate. The driver didn’t have tools to open the crate. So I had to do that. 15 1.5 inch screws later, we had the box out of the crate. The box itself is very simple. There are no packing materials on the screen part of the set. It’s all supported from the bottom. If this set was put on it’s side at any point during shipping, I think a lot of damage would occur to the flexible screen.

The Vendor
I ordered from Beach Camera (via Amazon). They were cheaper than Amazon at the time and there’s no sales tax. Amazon charges sales tax in Texas. This is the second time I’ve purchased a large TV from Beach and I highly recommend them.

1) Good price, good screen quality, comprehensive smart TV features, limited analog video input - I usually wait until others have given their reviewer comments before I decide to buy an expensive item on amazon, but this time I can't wait any longer because my old 46" Sanyo is dying and I must replace it with a new TV or else I have no news to watch at dinner time.

I had my eyes on plasma TVs because I want to have a wider viewing angle for my living room, and also that I am tired of the ghostly pixelization images during fast movements on my old 60 Hz Sanyo LCD. The plasma TV is supposed to eliminate these problems with its higher 600 Hz refresh rate which this TV indeed seems to do. I also was originally hoping to get a Samsung 3D plasma TV but I have a budget limit not to exceed 1K and the Samsungs are well above that. Then I came across this LG 60" plasma smart TV. I was once thinking if I should get the 3D version but later decided against that idea, after learning that the 3D counterpart of this LG plasma TV does not come with the active syncing 3D glasses needed and I would have to shell out a couple more hundreds to get them, far exceeding my budget limit.

Amazon special delivery of this TV was fast enough, though not within the usual 2 day time frame I usually enjoyed as a Primer member. I received the TV on June 20 and it took me less than an hour to unpack, gather the parts and assemble the stand onto the TV. My neighbor helped me bring it up to my home theater table that my Sanyo once sit, and this TV looks a LOT bigger than the old 46" Sanyo. In fact, if it's any bigger than 60" it would start to block my window.

Now I have used this TV for over two weeks I think I can share the following user experience with fellow amazon shoppers:

Pros:

I have not had time to do any video calibration using my Bru-ray calibration discs, but its preset video settings are good enough to me, except the default auto energy saving mode, which is a bit too dark under daylight. I usually use the presets Vivid and Sport and they look very bright and crisp even during day time hours. There is no dead pixel on my TV, so I consider myself lucky. I believe once I can get around my busy schedule and really calibrate the TV following the Bru-ray calibration discs, its picture quality will be even better.

Not much reflection on my TV even with plenty of daylight (but no direct sunlight) and I only notice the reflections when I turned it off.

The smart TV feature isn't bad at all compared to the another smart TV I had bought 2 years ago. It wasn't clear from the product description if this TV will provide Amazon Instant Video support, but it does. In fact, it has support for pretty much all the common video streaming services like Netflix,, Hulu and YouTube. I can cast videos from my iPad and Android to the TV screen on Netflix and YouTube (off my head I forgot if I can do that with Amazon video as well), so basically the smart feature on this TV completely replaces my existing Google Chromecast, freeing up one HDMI port. I only miss the background picture mode of the Chromecast when not in use.

Input selection software on this TV is very smart but not too smart. What I meant is that it will detect newly powered on devices and ask me if I wish to connect to them, but it will not insist that a device wasn't powered on and refuse to connect there. This is very important for my 3 to 1 video switch described below in the Cons section to work.

The tuner on this TV seems to be more sensitive than my old Sanyo, and it picks up more off-the-air stations than my old Sanyo. Actually, the tuner on this TV picks up quite a few duplicative broadcasts in Central Iowa, meaning that it's the same TV station but from different channels that I have to deselect. I don't have cable service so I use an outdoor antenna to pick up HDTV broadcasts for news. I watch no cable at all so the monthly fees on cable or satellite TV is a total waste to me.

The TV passes through all digital audios from all sources to it's optical audio output. I can get Dolby Digital and DTS sound from my XBMC home theater device and my DVD player that are connected to the TV with HDMI. Of course, due to the nature of its optical audio link I don't expect it would pass TrueHD or Dolby Plus to my receiver but my old receiver can't handle these newer audio streams anyway. Therefore, for my purpose this TV functions as a many-to-one digital video/audio switch when switching video sources, which greatly expands the capacity of the digital audio sources my receiver can receive without changing cables.

The remote seems functional and almost all buttons I need to control my TV was on it. The only complain is that I still don't know what some buttons do! Like the 4 color buttons?!

Cons:

The TV has only 3 HDMI port and 1 analog video port. The latter is especially limiting to because it uses the same set of 5 jacks for EITHER composite video Y, L and R OR component video Y, Pb, PR, L and R, but not both at the same time. Since I have many old composite video devices and also the Nintendo Wii which produces component video, this would be a major headache for me if not with the help of a cheap mechanical video switch like this one seen on amazon Cable N Wireless 3-Way Audio Video RCA Composite AV Video Game Selector Switch Box Splitter. I connected my VCR and LD player Y video line only to the switch and the Wii Y, Pb and Pr lines to the switch as well. I route all their audio directly to my receiver which is old and has plenty of L/R audio input jacks. This separation of video and audio to TV and the receiver also improves the video signal quality to the TV, although I don't know why. I then connect the output from the switch to the TV Y, Pb and Pr jacks and leaving the audio L/R ports unconnected. Now, because of the three line connection from the switch to the TV, the TV detects only component video input BUT it still allows me to choose the A/V input (i.e., composite) option and when I set to that the TV will comply and switch the video mode to composite even it doesn't detect it. Had the TV insisted that there was only component connection then my video switch scheme wouldn't work.

The TV gives me alternative choices to either play all sound through its own speakers, or to route all of them to its optical audio output, which requires me to turn on my receiver all the time. Unlike my old Sanyo TV which outputs on BOTH its speakers and digital audio output, I find the mutually exclusive audio output options somewhat inconvenient, especially that I have to go into the Settings menu to get the audio output option switched. I would love that the TV either output audios to both its speakers AND its optical output, or make it a simple one button switch on its remote control. That being said, I will gladly trade in this convenience for the digital audio passthrough feature of this new TV as I described above.

The TV does not come with good printed user manual. I can't find any printed instruction to explain some of the TV Settings like the 3 anti burn-in options and how do they differ, or to learn about the Apps in the Smart TV home screen. The TV does come with an electronic user support guide buried deep inside its menu hierarchy but even there I don't find all the instructions to explain some of the TV setting functions. I guess I will figure them out eventually.

Summary

Despite a few limitations, I gladly give this TV a 5 star rating given the low price I paid for it and the fact that it fits so well among my mostly old home theater devices. In particular I like its digital audio passthrough function that expands the limited digital input on my old receiver, but I also dislike that all my analog video devices must share the ONE analog video port on this TV. I noticed its price has changed dramatically on amazon so you may find it a bit expensive to buy now. However, I would definitely recommend this TV to buyers who do not need all that bells and whistles and just want a good quality TV screen with versatile smart TV features and a good price. This is the 2014 model just came out in May, so there should be plenty of supplies and chances of finding lower prices later.
